CHAPTER NINE

The Buzzing Light

March 2019

All of our additional projects had gone over extremely well with the team. We had no complaints and continued to gain a small following of team members as dedicated as we were.

Throughout 2005, several other small projects popped up around the building. With the bribed help of our maintenance team, we attached a storage box to the front greeter portal. This allowed any team members working the outside positions, to keep their change of wardrobe hidden, instead of having to keep it at their feet, or tuck it away in some part of the scenery.

We installed a similar storage box down in the temple dig site part of the queue, for similar reasons. All in all, a lot of our quality of life improvements had been made, and the 3rd unit began shifting its focus onto more purely décor projects.

We had found surplus and forgotten filming equipment all over the park, which we pulled into the queue line to emphasize the set environment. Some of the recovered equipment was added to the unload stations to try to liven it up from just being four walls and an attendant.

A new cache of film canisters and film reel storage cases were found in the old Herc and Xena show building. We recovered them, cleaned them up, and added custom labels and stencils to make them Mummy specific. There were times when Universal Creative would walk through and show off the décor in the vestibule, claiming they had done it all on their own. We always laughed when that would happen. Let them have their fun we thought.

Some of the very canisters we added were later pulled from the Mummy when their queue went under some redesign and construction in more recent years. The canisters wound up being placed in the prop shop on Hollywood Boulevard for sale at around $60.00 each. They all sold.

*the collective 3rd unit, pats self on back*

The temple dig site had been torn up by guests over the course of the first year. We took about four or five hours in a night to clean it up as best we could. There was a large wooden desk with schematics of digging equipment on it. Garbage had amassed behind and under the desk, which managed to escape normal end of day cleaning duties. We pulled the furniture out and cleaned as best we could. We also brought in paint markers and touched up spots that had worn down on the desk.

The pit beneath the statue of Anubis also became the guest’s impromptu trashcan. However it was never in the designs for the cross boards over the pit to be moveable, so we had to remove and replace each board after installing hinges, to allow a regular form of cleaning maintenance to the area.

Guests had crushed several pieces of decorative luggage that were scattered around the desk. We pried the suitcases and bags open, filled their empty void with bricks bottom to top, and then resealed them.
